Peter Schmeichel has become a regular follower of Celtic after his son, Kasper, signed for the club in the summer.
You can expect to hear more of the legendary goalkeeper bigging up Celtic, especially after Kasper Schmeichel signed a new contract.
That news broke hours before Celtic’s Champions League win over Young Boys on Wednesday night, where those all-important three points were secured and a clean sheet for the man with the gloves.
From those inside Parkhead to those on the other side, Celtic fans across the world would have been watching that game with a lot of nerves.
Over in Paris, PSG were beating Manchester City – which helped Brendan Rodgers’ side secure a play-off spot – and a certain Peter Schmeichel was in attendance watching the 4-2 thriller.
Working for American broadcaster CBS Sports, Peter’s mind was elsewhere despite the French champions coming from 2-0 down to win 4-2.
Peter Schmeichel reacts to Celtic beating Young Boys in Champions League
It was an action-packed and drama-filled first half and it even had Peter at the end of his seat because he admitted it was a ‘very tough’ to watch.
The 61-year-old noted everything that went on, including Arne Engels’ penalty being saved, but in the end, the job was done and it was deserved.
Now, Celtic take on Aston Villa at Villa Park next Wednesday and, a pretty optimistic, Peter Schmeichel, is feeling there is still a chance of a top-eight finish and how the Bhoys can play with freedom, as he told CBS Sports (22/01/25 at 10:50 pm).
“I kept an eye on the game as Celtic played Young Boys,” said Peter Schmeichel at the Stade de France.
“That was a very, very tough watch because, not only did Celtic miss a lot of chances, but also missed a penalty and it took them 86 minutes to score an own goal to win the game 1-0 and secure a place in the play-off.
“For Celtic to do that, it’s massive. It’s what they set out to do. There is a slim chance that they can even go into the top eight if they beat Aston Villa next week. There is a chance. Obviously, results have to go their way, but they are secure. They can go to that game and play free. (Against Young Boys), they were nervous and conceded a couple of chances.”

Peter Schmeichel hails son Kasper, including Auston Trusty and Cameron Carter-Vickers
Of course, Peter had to mention his son’s performance and he did play a crucial part in Celtic winning that match.
In the second half, when the game was still goalless, Kasper Schmeichel produced some outstanding saves to keep his side in the game, before doing the same in stoppage time.
It pleased his dad and he admitted that it was a ‘very unconformable’ watch, but he was ‘proud’ that he got through it.
The ex-Manchester United star also wanted to give his flowers to Cameron Carter-Vickers and Auston Trusty, who played ‘really well’.
“When he comes out like this and he actually makes two really good saves,” said P.Schmeichel. “It’s quite good after the event. When it’s happening, my God. It really is very uncomfortable. But that is a fantastic save.
“Trusty here, one of two centre-halves from America, in that Celtic team. Played really well, the both of them. Then we have the own goal. Idah has come on and it’s a good save by the keeper, but the Young Boys captain, it’s so unlucky, but at the end of the day, Celtic deserved the points.
“But it wasn’t over. They still needed some work from Kasper right at the end. This is five minutes into stoppage time. It’s not the most difficult save in the world, but still, when you take the timing into consideration, as soon as that happened, the game was over and that was the last action. They are in the play-offs now. Guaranteed. That is fantastic. I am very proud of Kasper and his team.”
