That was nervy from Celtic, but the job was done as play-off games beckon in the Champions League.
Every man who repped the shirt deserves huge credit as Celtic secured a narrow 1-0 win over Young Boys and confirmed their tickets to the next round.
It could and should have been a lot easier, but goal after goal was disallowed for offside in the first half, including Arne Engels’ penalty being saved.
Brendan Rodgers would have been scratching his head because the performance was there, it was just lacking that ruthless touch and finish in front of goal.
In the end, it was an own goal that did the job, but there was still late drama in stoppage-time when Kasper Schmeichel was forced into action.
Brendan Rodgers laughs at Kasper Schmeichel’s heroics for Celtic against Young Boys
Before kick-off, Celtic announced a new contract for Schmeichel, so it was an extra special day for the summer signing.
Midway through the second half, he produced two outstanding and match-winning saves, before showcasing his quality in stoppage-time.
Mark Wilson was describing the action and he was a nervous wreck as Celtic were put ‘under pressure’ before Schmeichel worked his magic, as he told Sky Sports News (22/01/25 at 9:55 am).
He explained how Rodgers proceeded to ‘laugh’ as Schmeichel came to the rescue
“Pressure still firmly on, Celtic can’t get the ball clear,” explained Wilson as the action was unfolding in the dying minutes.
“They are under pressure. Another ball in. They need their big defenders here. It’s a scramble. Oh, it’s a chance. Oh, what a save! What a save from Kasper Schmeichel.
“Brendan Rodgers is laughing. He can’t believe it. It’s an unbelievable chance for Young Boys, but Schmeichel saves. Surely that’s it. That’s Celtic through to the play-offs.”

Schmeichel’s stats for Celtic in the Champions League
Joe Hart’s retirement in the summer left a big void in between the sticks, but it has been filled pretty well by the new man donning the gloves.
Every Celtic fan was delighted when Schmeichel penned a new deal because they know they are in safe hands with the Danish shot-stopper.
In the Champions League this season, Schmeichel has kept three clean sheets and conceded ten goals, with seven of those coming in one match.
