The Scottish Cup fifth round has arrived and St Mirren vs Celtic will be the penultimate tie of the weekend fixtures.

The Hoops need not just a morale-boosting result to keep their hopes of winning the Double alive but also a spirited performance to convince fans they still have the hunger to win football matches.

That has been doubted over recent weeks with poor displays against Aberdeen and Hibs. Four points out of six were collected but in that time, Rangers have managed to catch Brendan Rodgers‘ side at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Attention turns to the cup momentarily and winning is paramount given how we were dumped out of the Viaplay Cup early in the season versus Kilmarnock.

St Mirren are tricky customers though and Stephen Robinson’s men have caused Celtic problems this season, namely at Parkhead in November.

Celts can take stock from the comprehensive 3-0 victory in Paisley on January 2 but the team appear to have regressed even since then.

In the led up to Sunday’s tie, Rodgers has bemoaned injuries as part of a number of ‘roadblocks’ Celtic have been met with this season. But he admits remaining optimistic about what his current squad can achieve.

We felt reluctant to leave it at as St Mirren 1-2 Celtic above. This could be another frustrating afternoon for the Hoops because quite frankly, our form is not good enough.

Every one of our attacking players bar Adam Idah are out of sorts and even the likes of Matt O’Riley and Callum McGregor are not playing to their best potential.

But anything other than a win will seriously set alarm bells ringing and Brendan Rodgers and the Celtic board will only come under more scrutiny from fans.

The pressure is on to win this one and you hope there’s enough quality on show to achieve it. Hope, however, is the key word.
