One of the highlights of Celtic’s win over Newcastle United was Nick Pope’s goalkeeping blunder.

The £10m goalkeeper was given the nod to start for Newcastle at Celtic Park and the England international gifted the Hoops’ second goal.

It was an incredible misjudgement in front of 45,000 fans and it set up a nightmare afternoon for Newcastle as Celtic took advantage of the Premier League side’s rustiness.

Johnny Kenny will not care that his goal was gifted to him but Celtic’s Unique Angle footage shows that Newcastle’s players did as it captured their reaction to Pope’s nightmare mistake.

Newcastle United players in disbelief at Nick Pope’s Celtic Park error

Celtic striker Johnny Kenny’s goal was a masterclass in how route one football can pay off from time to time.

In a simple move, Kasper Schmeichel launched a clearance into Kenny’s path and as Pope tried to head it clear, the ball floated over his head to allow Kenny to easily tuck it away.

And the Newcastle players’ reaction to it was first class.

The look of disbelief on the player’s faces as they begged for an offside decision and even seemed to point the finger at each other was brilliant as Kenny wheeled away inside a delighted Celtic Park.

Who Celtic face next as Brendan Rodgers continues pre-season preparations

Celtic’s win over Newcastle was Brendan Rodgers’ third win out of five games after beating Queen’s Park, Sporting CP, drawing with Ayr United and losing to Estrela da Amadora.

The Bhoys’ pre-season schedule continues with a game against Ajax in the Como Cup on the 24th of July.

After that, it’s either Ajax or Al Ahli as Rodgers will look to sign off his 2025 pre-season schedule with another two wins in preparation for the Scottish Premiership kick-off in August.
