Luke McCowan increased his popularity with the Celtic fans over the weekend.
Celtic beat St Mirren 1-0 in a tight and frustrating game for Brendan Rodgers’ side, but the job was done, with McCowan coming off the bench and scoring on the opening weekend of the new Premiership season.
This is the 27-year-old’s second full season at Celtic after he signed for his boyhood club from Dundee last summer.
Many think that McCowan should be starting more, and Chris Sutton feels the all-action midfielder is stepping closer towards that target.

Chris Sutton on Luke McCowan’s impact at Celtic
It was a deflected effort from McCowan, but he still did very well to work the ball in a tight area, get his shot off, and earn his reward of a goal.
Sutton lauded the midfielder as a ‘terrific signing’, and he told Sky Sports Football (03/08/25) that he will be telling Celtic that he would like to ‘start more games.’
“How many times did we see Luke McCowan last season come on and make an impact?” asked Sutton. “Whether it was a goal, assist or a bit of sharp play.
“McCowan, making an impact once again. What a terrific signing he has been. He will tell you that he would like to start more games. Keep popping them in like that, and you stand a better chance.
“What a signing he has been. Last season, his cameos were crucial for Celtic. Cameo crucial once again (vs St Mirren).”
McCowan’s minutes and goal contributions for Celtic
It needs to be noted that McCowan arrived on transfer deadline day, so he didn’t have a pre-season under his belt.
That meant that he needed more time than others to settle in, but he still looked lively and full of quality pretty early on in his Celtic career.
Despite that, the Greenock-born player didn’t earn the starts or the minutes he would have liked, even though he hit double figures in goal contributions for the season.
- Games: 41
- Starts: 14
- Minutes: 1,540
- Goals: 7
- Assists: 9
