‘You did say’ – Pat Bonner furiously slaps down BBC man’s criticism of Celtic’s Adam Idah vs Rangers

Adam Idah has come in for a lot of criticism since joining Celtic permanently last summer.

After a successful five-month loan stint, Idah became one of Celtic’s most expensive signings of all-time after the Hoops paid Norwich City £8.5m to bring him to Glasgow.

In his first full season under Brendan Rodgers, Idah has scored 18 goals in 50 appearances with many of those from the substitutes bench.

However, when Pat Bonner heard criticism of the Celtic striker during commentary of the Rangers game, the Hoops hero was having none of it.

Pat Bonner slams ‘fish out of water’ criticism of Celtic’s Adam Idah vs Rangers

Indeed, Idah scored the goal that earned Celtic a draw at Ibrox but just before that, BBC commentator Liam McLeod made a comment about the Irishman that annoyed Bonner.

Commentating on the action, MacLeod said on BBC Radio Sportsound, “They would prefer him in the middle of him, Adam Idah as he tries to spin away from Tavernier who gets between the man and the ball and wins it back for Rangers and Idah looked like a fish out of water there. How much longer is he giving Idah here Packie?”

Bonner, audibly annoyed replied: “He’s playing out the left hand side, Liam. It’s not his position. He’s a centre forward, to come out in left hand side to pick up the ball. So sorry, sorry. I’m not agreeing with that.”

McLeod: “No, I’m not critiquing his performance as a left winger. I’ve been speculating as to how long Brendan Rodgers would leave it before changing the system.”

Bonner: “What you did say is that he’s out here like a fish out of water. He’s out in the left hand side. He’s not playing through where he’s supposed to be, playing through the centre.”

Fellow co-commentator Stephen Thompson shouts, “Square go” as McLeod explains his position further and replies, “It’s an analogy” before the conversation moved on.

Adam Idah’s all-time goalscoring record for Celtic will surprise critics

The reason Idah is being criticised is because of the huge price tag he has wrapped around his neck.

£8.5m is massive money for a Scottish club but Idah’s record is not as bad as many of his critics are making out.

Considering the Irishman barely starts every game for Celtic, that is not a bad return from Idah. Maybe it’s time people get off his back and supported the striker instead of laying unfair criticism at his door.
