‘Dear life’ – Stephen Robinson makes a claim about Celtic’s bench after St Mirren miss out on Europe

Celtic left it late against St Mirren on trophy day.

For the champions of Scotland, nothing was on the line, in terms of the game itself, but St Mirren were searching for a European finish.

Stephen Robinson’s side needed that win, and other results to go their way, but with Dundee United beating Aberdeen on the final day, those dreams and hopes were dashed.

Plus, James Forrest’s record-breaking goal and equaliser in stoppage time ensured that Celtic’s title party had a cherry to put on top of the cake.

But despite the heartbreak for Robinson, he was magnanimous and classy after the game about Celtic.

With Celtic behind in the game, Brendan Rodgers didn’t waste any time, and he brought on his bench players in the 55th minute.

That included Forrest, with Yang Hyunjun and Luke McCowan also coming onto the field of play, before Johnny Kenny and Jeffrey Schlupp followed later on in the half.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Robinson spoke about ‘the talent’ and ‘firepower’ Celtic were able to bring on, and how it meant that his side were just ‘hanging on’ towards the end.

“We are unbeaten against the top six,” said Robinson. “For a club like St Mirren to be unbeaten against the level of teams we are playing against, the resources we are playing against, is incredible. I am proud to be the manager of this football club.

“Celtic are the only team we haven’t beaten in the top six. That would have been a great milestone for the club again.

“But 50 points. Unbeaten in the top six. For a third year in a row. I can’t really ask more from them players.

“You see the talent that Celtic are bringing on. The firepower they are bringing on. We are hanging on for dear life at the end.”

Celtic ‘deserve to be champions’

That’s four titles in a row for Scotland’s most successful club, including the same number of titles for Rodgers, and 14 out of the last 15 for the club itself.

It’s dominance of the highest order, and it proves why Celtic are the biggest and best in Scotland, because nobody is able to get near them.

That’s why Robinson was classy in his comments about Celtic lifting yet another crown.

“Celtic deserve to be champions,” added Robinson. “You see that they keep going, going and going until the end. Then you get punished for one little mistake.”
