‘A big thing’ – Why pundit mentions Celtic ‘alarm bells ringing’ as he says Brendan Rodgers will want more

Celtic are comfortably clear of Rangers in the Scottish Premiership standings.

It is a 13 point lead for the Hoops at the summit of the division even after a disappointing 3-3 draw with Dundee on Tuesday where Brendan Rodgers took aim at his defence for conceding weak goals.

Some sections of the support were left frustrated with the draw as well as how late it took the leaders to see off Ross County in their other recent outing where they would eventually dispatch of the Staggies in a 4-1 romp.

Yet the club are storming out in front of every other team in the country with Celtic also sitting just one victory away from a spot in the Champions League knockout playoff.

Marvin Bartley reckons “alarm bells” are always likely to go off no matter the context for Celtic fans as they are so used to winning week-in, week-out.

But he’s adamant that Rodgers has nothing to worry about from his squad.

Celtic’s dominance means any dropped points trigger alarm bells

“I think when Celtic have such high standards that when they do drop points domestically there’s always gonna be some sort of alarm bells ringing,” Bartley said during his punditry work with Superscoreboard on Clyde 1.

Brendan said they went soft defending a set-play, they were expected to go through the gears and they didn’t.

“But when you’re playing for a team used to winning things, even the smallest drop off is gonna become a big thing.”

One fan called into the radio show to discuss Adam Idah’s recent form which has satisfied Rodgers.

For the punter, however, the Irishman’s 12 match goal drought has not been good enough.

“Scary” Kyogo has hit the goals trail again in recent weeks while Johnny Kenny has returned from a prolific loan with Shamrock Rovers and could have netted vs County when he replaced Idah.

Bartley feels the former Norwich City striker will know himself how he has to improve in front of goal but that, too, won’t worry the manager too much.

And when asked if Kenny might replace his countryman, Bartley wasn’t so sure.

What Marvin Bartley said about Adam Idah vs Johnny Kenny

“Talking about Idah and Kenny, I can’t see (Kenny) starting, we saw him coming off the bench at the weekend and getting an opportunity.

Idah is someone Celtic paid £9million for. He’s still only 23 but will know he has to do better for sure.

“He’s not hit the heights that he did at the back end of last season in terms of goals, but these are the pressures that come.

“You don’t get a long time to settle in, he has to start scoring goals.

“I don’t think it’s a massive worry for Brendan, we know his European football is on the horizon soon so he’ll want the standards to go up.

“Will he be panicking? No. Will he want more? Yes.”
