Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic future is in doubt.

Despite a 100% record of winning league titles, the Parkhead boss has struggled to secure his transfer targets, leading to clear unrest among Celtic fans.

A failure to qualify for the Champions League hasn’t helped, as the Hoops missed out on an opportunity to qualify for the tournament for the fourth year running – this would’ve been a modern record.

Rodgers’ side are yet to concede a league goal this campaign, a more positive side of events at Celtic Park – but fan feelings are telling a different story.

For one former Scotland and Rangers manager, there is further possibility of fan uproar.

Alex McLeish on Brendan Rodgers potentially moving back to England

Rodgers’ transfer demands were made publicly, but still not met. For some Celtic fans, this seals that he will leave the club next summer.

Rodgers’ lack of communication since the goalless Glasgow Derby draw at Ibrox leaves everything open to speculation, and now, Alex McLeish has joined in.

Speaking on the PLZ Football Podcast, he said: “There was a bit of unrest, and a lot of Celtic fans held it against Brendan the last time he left to go to Leicester. Some of them were moaning about him coming back. But he’s a tremendous manager.

“He knows what he wants. He’s maybe not got Celtic up to the level that he wants to; there seems to be a bit of a stand-off between him and the board at the moment.

“We’re reading in the papers that there’s possibilities of him going back to England, and if that happens, I think there will be uproar at Parkhead.

There probably would be uproar if Rodgers were to depart – but not directed at the same place it was when he made the move to Leicester in 2019.

What next for Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers?

One thing that Rodgers hasn’t done in his career is manage abroad.

Though he (notoriously) speaks Spanish and other languages, Rodgers has only ever managed in the United Kingdom, despite his well-earned pedigree.

Despite McLeish’s suggestions, the next step for the 52-year-old may fulfil his career-long ambition of managing a team overseas.

Rodgers’ ability to win trophies and track record of improving players will hold appeal for many clubs on the continent. If his ambitions continue to not be matched at Celtic, his thoughts could move towards deciding his new club.
