Lubo Moravcik names the signing he ‘wanted’ Celtic to make this summer that they may live to regret missing out on

Lubomir Moravcik is the latest former Celtic man to chime in on the disappointment of the transfer window.

Despite making 11 signings in the transfer window, the Hoops still missed out on a host of targets and in response to that, the Celtic board have received a vote of no confidence from various supporters’ groups.

The lack of a striker was a big sticking point for fans as Kelechi Iheanacho was a last-ditch option to replace Adam Idah.

That’s not to say that they didn’t try, and according to Moravcik, there was one that got away.

Lubo Moravcik says Celtic should’ve signed David Strelec

One of the candidates for the number nine role was forward David Strelec.

It was a transfer rumour that had been in the works for some time, with Strelec’s father saying the Bhoys were keen on his son.

Strelec scored a wonder goal for Slovakia against Germany to rub salt in the wounds after he chose to sign for Middlesbrough towards the end of the window.

His goalscoring pedigree suggests that he could’ve been a great option, and his fellow countryman Moravcik was hoping he would follow in his footsteps.

He told the Sunday Post: “I wanted to see David in a Celtic jersey. I thought he would have been an excellent signing and that was my honest opinion. He was brilliant for Slovakia last week and has the ability and mentality to do very well at a very high level. But it is not to be for David and Celtic and we must move on.”

Lubo Moravcik sets Celtic a Europa League target

What’s done is done in the window and Celtic must now put full focus on the domestic and European campaigns.

It will be Europa League football for the Bhoys after they were beaten on penalties by Kairat Almaty in the Champions League qualifiers.

In theory, playing one stage below the Champions League could mean potential to go deep into the competition and the former Hoops forward thinks a quarter-final spot should be the aim.

“I still think Celtic can win games at Europa League level and there needs to be a way of thinking that targets a quarter-final place in this tournament,” he said. “Why not? There are many quality players in the Celtic squad.”
