Andreas Thom
- From: Bayer Leverkusen
- Transfer: £2.3m
- Appearances: 76
- Goals: 15
Andreas Thom was the first German to ever play for Celtic and was a club record £2.3m signing in August 1995 from Bayer Leverkusen.
The forward was a creative option initially under manager Tommy Burns, before playing a part in Wim Jansen’s side stopping Rangers from winning 10-in-a-row.
He won two major domestic honours with the Hoops before leaving the club in 1998 for Hertha Berlin.
Andreas Hinkel
- From: Sevilla
- Transfer: £1.9m
- Appearances: 100
- Goals: 1
Former Celtic boss Gordon Strachan signed right-back Andreas Hinkel for just under £2m during the January 2008 transfer window.
Hinkel was a good crosser of the ball and was also effective at overlapping the winger in front of him to make the option for a pass or pulling a defender away.
He was an ever-present in the Celtic first-team up until he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament at the start of the 2010/11 campaign.
Marvin Compper
- From: RB Leipzig
- Transfer: £1m
- Appearances: 1
- Goals: 0
One of Celtic’s worst ever modern signings, it has to be said. Central defender Marvin Compper actually spent a year-and-a-half at the club despite only playing one game.
That was against Greenock Morton in the Scottish Cup, before numerous injury issues prevented him from playing for Celtic again.

Jeremy Toljan
- From: Borussia Dortmund
- Transfer: Loan
- Appearances: 14
- Goals: 0
Remember Jeremy Toljan? You’d be forgiven if you can’t. The defender only spent half a season on loan at Celtic from Borussia Dortmund.
He was signed on deadline day in January 2019, becoming Brendan Rodgers’ final Celtic signing during his first spell as manager.
Neil Lennon then became interim manager and Toljan helped Celtic seal the Treble Treble.
Moritz Jenz
- From: FC Lorient
- Transfer: Loan
- Appearances: 19
- Goals: 2
Another German loan signing was Moritz Jenz. He came to Celtic on loan under Ange Postecoglou to provide cover for the injured Carl Starfelt.
He signed for the full 2022/23 season, but left in the January because he wasn’t getting enough game time. Jenz made it clear, however, that he wanted to stay at Parkhead.
Nicolas Kuhn
- From: SK Rapid Wien
- Transfer: £2.8m
- Appearances: 69
- Goals: 24
Certainly Celtic’s best and most successful German player, Nicolas Kuhn actually struggled to make an immediate impact due to dental issues.
But after a full pre-season last summer, he was fit and raring to go. He was easily Celtic’s best player up until Christmas last season, with some particularly good performances in the Champions League.
His form dropped off in the second half of the campaign with Daizen Maeda stealing the limelight, and is now being linked with a big-money exit to RB Leipzig and Como 1907.
