Brendan Rodgers has gone down an interesting road with the Celtic fans of late.

The Irishman returned to Glasgow last summer after that infamous call to leave Celtic for Leicester City in 2019.

As a result of it, Rodgers had a reputation to re-build and he did that by guiding Celtic to the double last season and then League Cup final glory over Rangers at Hampden last month.

But, after Celtic beat St Mirren on Sunday, the man decided to stick his chest out and become vocal towards the supporters.

It’s not something you see often, but it has made headlines and divided opinion amongst many!

Ally McCoist tells Alan Brazil why Brendan Rodgers criticised Celtic fans

It all stems from talk of Kieran Tierney returning to Celtic and fans hoping it becomes a reality because he is expected to leave Arsenal ahead of his contract running out in the summer.

Ally McCoist tried to explain the situation to Alan Brazil and how Rodgers was ‘having a go’ at his own fans for singing a song about one of their own, as he told talkSPORT (08/01/25 at 6:10 am).

The former striker thinks Rodgers was ‘defending’ Greg Taylor, who is Celtic’s starting left-back, and how his place would be under threat if his fellow countryman returned.

“Did you say earlier that Brendan is getting a bit of stick from the Celtic supporters,” asked Brazil. To which McCoist responded: “No, the other way about.”

Brazil added: “Oh, he is having a go at the Celtic fans?”

And then McCoist explained: “He is having a go at the Celtic fans. I think the Celtic fans were singing about the return of Kieran Tierney. To be fair to Brendan, he was defending wee boy Greg Taylor, who has done fine. It’s not a major fallout or anything like that. But it will be interesting to see if Tierney gets back there in January.”

Brazil and McCoist praise Kieran Tierney amid Celtic talk

The thought of Tierney and Daizen Maeda linking up on the left flank is one that should seriously excite the supporters.

But Brazil made it clear that Tierney has to ‘get back playing’ after his injury troubles amid those Celtic transfer links – he has only featured once for Arsenal this season.

McCoist agreed and labelled the former Treble winner as a ‘terrific player’, as he added on talkSPORT.

Brazil stated: “Well, he has got to get back playing, hasn’t he?! It has just been a disaster. Injury after injury.”

And McCoist agreed: “I know. I really feel for him. I think he is a terrific player. I really, really do. I am disappointed he hasn’t got more game time at Arsenal, but he has just been riddled with injuries.”
