Ally McCoist’s ‘catastrophic’ prediction if Celtic beat Rangers in the Glasgow Derby

All the big build-up to Celtic facing Rangers begins now that the Champions League fixtures are a painful, but fresh, memory for both clubs.

Celtic’s defeat to Kairat Almaty could be eased on Sunday if Brendan Rodgers walks out of Ibrox with all three points on Sunday afternoon.

For Rangers, however, Celtic could further compound their pain with an Ibrox victory after Russell Martin’s humiliation at Club Brugge this week.

And if that happens, Ally McCoist said it would be ‘catastrophic’ for his old club.

Ally McCoist says Celtic beating Rangers would be ‘disastrous’

McCoist was on commentary duty in last night’s Rangers defeat to Club Brugge as he looked ahead to the visit of Celtic on Sunday.

McCoist said on TNT Sports, “If you lose on Sunday, you are out of the Champions League and you are nine points behind your biggest rivals, it would be a catastrophic start to the season.

“The obvious question is, if he doesn’t survive (it), who do you bring in? The flip side of the coin is that you cannot keep changing managers all the time.

“He has had a disastrous start but I’ll go back to the point, the level of recruitment has to be better. You don’t want to harp on about it all the time but the recruitment has been so poor it’s been unbelievable.

“You are going to get one or two of them wrong, I get that. They are obviously talented players, there is no doubt about it, but see when you play with Rangers, you have got to be a man. No matter what age you are, you have got to be a man.”

The big title collapse Rangers had vs Celtic when Ally McCoist was manager

McCoist was the manager of Rangers during their liquidation event in 2012.

But before that, in season 2011/12 McCoist was the manager of the club when they had a ten-point gap to Celtic in October of that season.

Celtic had just fought back from 3-0 down to earn a 3-3 draw at Kilmarnock under Neil Lennon and what happened after that was spectacular.

Celtic went on an incredible run of results and in December 2011, a 1-0 win at Parkhead took the Hoops to the top of the league with an amazing 12-point swing in two months.

Lennon went on to win the title that season whilst Rangers went out of business.
