With the new season kick-off for Celtic and Rangers a matter of days away, pundits and ex-players have been giving their opinions on who will win the league.

Celtic will undoubtedly start as favourites due to the vast financial resources Brendan Rodgers has at his disposal.

The Celtic manager has been talking transfers this week as Rodgers expects to add more new faces before the end of this month.

With Jahmai Simpson-Pusey’s Celtic move imminent, Rodgers still has work to do to strengthen other parts of the Hoops’ squad.

However, despite Celtic looking possibly weaker, Andy Halliday has delivered a serious dose of reality to Russell Martin’s chances of winning the league this season.

Andy Halliday says Rangers’ squad is not good enough to pip Celtic to the title

For all the hype surrounding the 49ers Enterprises’ involvement in Rangers, Halliday tells the truth about the state of the Rangers squad and how it’s not good enough to win the league from Celtic.

Halliday told Open Goal, “Rangers haven’t won their opening day fixture for the past three seasons. Last year, Hearts away, year before, Kilmarnock away or the year before that.

“But regardless, straight away Rangers are chasing after the first game every single season.

“Looking at it so far, with all due respect, from the Panathinaikos game, you’ve got Dowell out wide, and young Findlay Curtis up front, that’s not winning in the league is it?”

Where Celtic still need to strengthen this summer

With Celtic adding Simpson-Pusey this week, Rodgers still has work to do to get this squad ready for the domestic and Champions League campaigns.

Celtic need at least two wingers to help bolster Rodgers’ attacking options and the case could be made about adding a first-team ready striker.

In the heart of the team, Celtic could also do with a midfield enforcer to help support Callum McGregor.

Whether Rodgers will get all this and possibly more remains to be seen considering Celtic’s transfer business has been stuttering along this summer.
