The Celtic board are in a bit of a pickle, and they have a huge call to make this weekend if they suffer another defeat.

The season speaks for itself. Celtic are in a mess; there have been constant protests against the board, and things have become worse since Brendan Rodgers’ departure in October.

Wilfried Nancy has lost five games in charge after replacing Martin O’Neill at the start of December, and many supporters are already baffled that he is still in the dugout ahead of the weekend game against Rangers.

But Andy Townsend has just been left perplexed by the whole Nancy situation, how he was appointed, and what has been coming out of his mouth.

Andy Townsend on Wilfried Nancy’s situation at Celtic

If you are losing games as Celtic manager, you can say things however you want, but it’s never going to sit well with supporters.

That’s the situation Nancy finds himself in, and unfortunately, he hasn’t helped himself on occasions, especially when talking to the media.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Townsend highlighted how, pretty much early on in Nancy’s reign, he was talking about ‘performances’ rather than the actual result.

The former Republic of Ireland international added that what makes matters worse for Nancy is that he replaced O’Neill in the dugout, and how that call itself was baffling from the men in suits.

Before O’Neill left his interim spell, many did raise concerns over Nancy coming in and having very little time to work, and whether or not it would have been better for their legendary coach to stay on.

And now that nightmare has become a reality, and you sense Nancy won’t be in charge much longer, especially if Celtic lose to Rangers.

“I remember when he first walked through the door, and after the first couple of games or defeats, he turned around and said, ‘I am more concerned with performances than results.’” said Townsend.

“Things like that. On the back of someone like Martin O’Neill goes in, and you know exactly what you are going to get with a Martin team. The way that he got them moving again in the right direction. Very effectively and very quickly.

“Then, when this guy comes in and starts trotting around lines like that. Why have they ended up going down this road with this sort of coach? It didn’t make any sense at all.”
