Celtic fans will be singing the praises of Arne Engels after the Belgian scored from the spot to help his side overcome Dundee in the Scottish Premiership.

Coming back into the side as part of six changes made by Brendan Rodgers, the 21-year-old got a full 90 minutes under his belt after being rested at Fir Park against Motherwell last Sunday.

Following Alistair Johnston’s opener to break the deadlock, Arne Engels was awarded the chance to double his side’s advantage after Antonio Portales tugged Kyogo Furuhashi to the floor moments later.

Stepping up calmly, the Belgium international slotted low past Jon McCracken to send Celtic onto a routine victory against Dundee that has maintained top spot in the Scottish Premiership.

Delighted with his impact, Engels has now taken to Instagram after proving his point from the start at Parkhead.

Taking his spot-kick with aplomb, Engels showed passion in his Celtic celebration by gesticulating to supporters after being mobbed by his teammates.

Now on three goals and three assists from his opening 11 appearances in green and white, the Bhoys’ £11 million record outlay has made a bright start to life in Glasgow after joining from Augsburg on deadline day.

Aberdeen lay in wait for Celtic this Saturday in the Premier Sports Cup semi-final, which the Dendermonde-born man will feel he has a chance of starting in amid his exploits against Dundee.

Arne Engels proves his point after unwarranted criticism

Despite a largely positive start at the club, Engels has received some unwarranted criticism while at Celtic, mainly due to his price-tag and the sky-high expectations that have originated as a result of his fee.

However, he has now proved his point. Statistically, stat-trackers Fotmob show he has created 12 chances on league duty this term and taken 11 shots at goal, suggesting he is performing at an adequate rate despite opinions to the contrary.

Last weekend, Rodgers told Engels’ critics that he will be a ‘fantastic player’ for Celtic, which is a notion that is already beginning to take shape on the pitch.

Spending big money on players often comes with it’s risks, but in the case of Engels, you suspect he is only getting started in the Irishman’s engine room.
