Martin O’Neill’s stock was already at legend status at Celtic, but it has gone beyond that now.
Celtic’s iconic coach isn’t just popular with the supporters, but it’s also with those who fight tooth and nail for him on the pitch.
That was proven by Celtic’s title triumph on Saturday afternoon, as those in green and white beat a broken Hearts to seal title number 56.
Ashley Young played for O’Neill during his days at Aston Villa, and he was sure to congratulate his former boss by stating on social media: ‘What a man’, and ‘What a legend.’

Martin O’Neill is lauded by Ashley Young after Celtic beat Hearts
There is just no way Celtic would have won the title if O’Neill hadn’t come back the first time in October, but most importantly in January.
Even though Brendan Rodgers was at the helm in August, his relationship had completely and utterly broken with the Celtic board, and it was portraying itself on the pitch.
If Wilfried Nancy had stayed on, then Celtic wouldn’t have even finished in the top three, never mind top of the pile.
Either way, O’Neill is rightfully getting his flowers, and even from those who haven’t worked with him for a long time, as ex-England winger Young has proven.
.Martin Martin Martin……,’ wrote Young. ‘What A Man….What A Legend, Congrats Gaffer.’

O’Neill’s record on his return to Celtic
When Rodgers left Celtic in October, one of the most shocking things to come out of it was the return of O’Neill.
Not in the sense that fans didn’t want him back, but nobody thought he would be prowling that Celtic Park touchline again after his first legendary spell.
But that’s exactly what has happened, and it could even be argued that what has happened this season is better than any of his other title wins.
- O’Neill’s record this season: 34 games
- Wins: 27
- Draws: 3
- Defeats: 4
- Goals: 80
- Goals conceded: 39
- Points Per Match: 2.47
