Auston Trusty on dream Celtic Champions League scenario coming true

Celtic are a massive club and win trophies every single year.

There is a grand history of success at Parkhead and the opportunity to win silverware at Scotland‘s biggest club can be too good to turn down for players looking to make a move.

For other players, like Auston Trusty, the accomplishments and chance to lift trophies is a massive draw.

The American made a £6million switch to Parkhead last summer in a bid to do it all and he has already won the Premier Sports Cup for the first time.

But there is also another significant pull that Celts have when transfer negotiations are underway and that is their participation in the Champions League.

Brendan Rodgers‘ side are into the knockout playoff spots this season after a top eight place was even mathematically possible until the final matchday.

Celtic were drawn against Bayern Munich in the latter stages this morning after guaranteeing themselves a massive fixture no matter what by finishing 21st in the League Phase.

And Trusty has revealed these are the types of game he and other players sign up for when the moment comes to decide on whether or not to become a Celt.

Real Madrid would have been the Bayern alternative and that excited Trusty, too.

He has always fancied challenging himself at the top level having previously played in the Premier League with Sheffield United.

The top European competition is a step up from that again and Trusty insists he has had a blast starring in green and white on the continent this campaign.

“I back this team no matter what and I’m looking forward to the challenge,” the US international explained.

“Are these the kind of games I signed up for? Yes, absolutely. Those big moments, that’s what you want to play in. It’s what you dream of. But we are going into these games to compete – absolutely.

“That’s the answer. I don’t think anybody is going there just to have fun. You’re going there to win a game.

“I’m enjoying the competition. I think to play at the highest stage in club football is a dream come true, but also as a player when you get a chance to back yourself and show that you can compete at this level and no one can really take that away from you, it’s the greatest feeling.

“No matter what, no one can say anything because you’re playing at the highest level against the best teams, against the best players in the world.”

Trusty feels plying his trade in the UCL has improved him as an individual.

Learning curves against Borussia Dortmund and Aston Villa have come but the defender knows it will be of benefit in the long-run.

Trusty will always back himself and his teammates in the difficult moments.

And although the Bayern clash will be no easy feat, he is still preparing to compete at the top end and give a good account of Scottish football.

Trusty says Champions League football has made him better player

“When you perform well and do well as a team, individually and collectively, it’s a great feeling. Does it make you a better player? Absolutely, absolutely,” he added.

“I played at Villa Park last year, I played against the top teams in the Premier League, so at the end of the day, when you play at that level, game in, game out, everyone’s human at the end of the day, they’re football players and so am I.

“We all train the same, we all have the same mindset, so at the end of the day, it’s just whoever wants it more is for the day, but everyone can compete.

“The challenges we’ve had this year and even the Dortmund game, you can see how we’ve backed ourselves up from that game.

“So when we have moments that don’t necessarily go our way, I think we have a good backbone on this team that can bounce back.”
