Auston Trusty’s cop-out when asked about the timing of Wilfried Nancy’s Celtic arrival

The appointment of Wilfried Nancy was not met with universal approval by the Celtic supporters.

Some Celtic fans were dubious about bringing in a coach from the MLS due to the lack of jeopardy in the league format the US runs with. Lack of relegation means the pressure Nancy has experienced is not as intense as the other leagues around the world.

And there were others who were willing to give Nancy a chance at Celtic because of the Frenchman’s reputation for being a progressive and attacking coach.

Ultimately, results and performances will be the judge of any Celtic manager, but what Auston Trusty said about Nancy’s appointment post-match is very telling indeed.

Auston Trusty refuses to get ‘involved’ in Celtic discussion over Wilfried Nancy

The American defender was taking in post-match media duties after Celtic’s defeat to St Mirren when he was asked why things were not clicking with the team.

Trusty told Sky Sports, “I think we need to go back and watch [the games again], it’s been a tough week. I think people look at the results and put the teams down.

“It’s been seven days or whatever it’s been. Obviously to lose the past three games doesn’t look good.

“But we need to stay together and regroup and shift it.”

When asked if it was too much to change the manager before these three games, Trusty replied, “It’s not my call, it’s not my pay grade. I don’t get involved in that stuff.”

“It’s not my call, it’s not my paygrade. I don’t get involved in that stuff.” What do you make of this answer from Auston Trusty?

Auston Trusty’s answer is hardly a ringing endorsement of the Celtic manager

There are two ways Celtic fans could look at Trusty’s answer here. The first is that the US international is not getting himself embroiled in any discussion over his manager and that he’s respecting Nancy with this answer.

The second, and this is where I lean towards, is that this was the perfect opportunity for Trusty to publicly back Nancy and show support for the Celtic manager.

Trusty could have said ‘the players are right behind him’ or at the very least ‘it’s taking longer to adjust than we thought’. But he didn’t.

He completely shut down the question and by saying nothing, Trusty’s answer spoke volumes.
