Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers says it was ‘common sense’ to step in and aid the young fan who entered the pitch to celebrate today’s Scottish Premiership win for the Bhoys.
Reo Hatate, Matt O’Riley and Daizen Maeda were all on target to secure a 3-0 victory that extends Celtic’s unbeaten league run and ensures the big travelling support heads home happy this afternoon.
After the game, one excited supporter entered the pitch and was tackled by stewards. Rodgers stepped in and pushed them off him, delivering the fan back to the stand without further action being taken. A clip of the incident is quickly going viral.
Asked by Sky Sports about the incident in his post-match interview, Rodgers explained: “It’s a great day for Celtic. To come here as a player and have that much support is absolutely amazing, especially after a midweek game to get that energy.
“The wee guy at the end there, it’s just common sense, it’s a young kid. He’s on to see his heroes, he wants to see his players. He shouldn’t be punished or prosecuted for that, especially when the security guy is a lot older than him. He just wants to see his heroes, so it’s common sense to let him back with his mates.”
The actions of Rodgers were certainly popular with fans both at the game and those online who have watched clips. It’s not like the young supporter posed any issue or danger. As the manager says, he was just a bit excited. And that’s allowed!
Over 7,000 travelling fans were at the stadium today and it’s the kind of backing that really helps the team overcome adversity and push on to three points.
Supporters will be hoping for more positive results over the coming weeks. The Bhoys have a match away to Motherwell, then home fixtures against Lazio and Kilmarnock before the next international break.
Positive results in all of those would really start to show everyone that Celtic are building up to a peak after some initial question marks in the early stages of the campaign.
