Brendan Rodgers has addressed a question regarding his future as manager of Celtic after being knocked out of the Champions League.

Celtic lost 3-2 on aggregate to Bayern Munich on Tuesday as the Hoops bowed out at the knockout phase play-offs in agonising fashion.

Alphonso Davies broke the hearts of millions of Celtic fans across the world as his 94th-minute strike sealed the Bhoys’ fate in Europe this season.

Rodgers hailed his heroic Celtic stars after the Allianz Arena heartache before telling reporters on Friday that there is motivation to finish the season strong domestically.

At the same press conference, Rodgers was also quizzed on whether Celtic’s excellent Champions League campaign fuels his desire to pen a contract extension at Parkhead.

Rodgers on his Celtic contract and future

Rodgers was appointed manager of Celtic for a second time in June 2023 as he replaced Treble winner Ange Postecoglou.

The Northern Irishman signed a three-year deal and that will run out in the summer of 2026, which is just under 18 months away.

Responding to the question over his future, Rodgers says nothing has been discussed with him and the board as of yet.

He said: “To be fair we’ve not really had any conversation around that. I think that what we’ll always look at is what’s the very best thing for Celtic. Above any individual will always be what’s right for Celtic.

“But certainly when I came back, domestically my record was okay and I knew to become better in Europe I needed a stronger squad. The club have been fantastic that way in terms of providing that.

“We’ve shown what we can do and all within the finances of the club. Hopefully going forward we can continue to push that way so we can keep becoming a seasonal team at that level and challenging.

“In terms of the length of me staying I’m obviously very happy here. But it will always be what’s best for Celtic.

“In this moment in time, the real focus is finishing the season as strong as we can.”

What Rodgers said in November about his Celtic contract

Rodgers is committed to seeing out his current Celtic contract and said in November that he reckons at some point during the 2025/26 campaign, his future will be discussed internally.

He said: “At the end of three years, I’ll have done nearly six years as Celtic manager which is a long time for a Celtic manager. I haven’t really thought about it.

“For near on a year, there was probably more people that wanted me out than in so I’m not going to be talking about new contracts now!

“I just need to continue to work well, do my very best for the club and I’m pretty sure at some point next season we can see how we’re going and take it from there.”

Rodgers can enter into his final year as a two-time Treble winner if Celtic can sweep up the rest of the domestic trophies on offer this season having already won the Premier Sports Cup.
