Brendan Rodgers shares what ‘clever’ Upamecano did right after he ‘fouled’ Celtic hero Daizen Maeda vs Bayern Munich

Celtic lost on aggregate to Bayern Munich after two legs in the Champions League.

The Hoops almost beat Bayern Munich in the Allianz Arena as Celtic gave the Bundesliga club a scare in the Champions League.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers was within a whisker of taking Bayern to extra time after leading 1-0 through a Nicolas Kuhn goal until Alphonso Davies popped up at the death to poke home the equaliser to send the Bhoys out on aggregate.

However, it was a controversial ‘foul’ on Celtic’s Daizen Maeda just before Munich’s equaliser that has grabbed the Hoops supporter’s attention as controversy surrounds whether or not the German club’s goal should have stood.

And Rodgers has shared what he really thought of that incident.

Brendan Rodgers ‘disappointed’ at Bayern Munich player’s actions towards Daizen Maeda

Rodgers was asked about the controversial clash between Upamecano and Maeda before Bayern’s goal as the Celtic boss shared what they big defender did that could have been the reason for a foul not being awarded.

Rodgers said [3m 19s], “Yeah, I think that’s again, that’s a little bit of our inexperience at this level. Upamecano is clever, he picks him up because if he stays down and it was a knock on the head, I felt the referee should have given the free kick anyway or certainly stopped the game.

“And maybe a more experienced player or team might have stayed down and then the referee has to stop the game.

“But he didn’t, they played on and then eventually obviously they got the goal.

“So yeah, we were disappointed that we obviously didn’t get that in the build-up.”

Celtic’s next task after Bayern Munich disappointment

Celtic now needs to forget what happened in Munich and concentrate on what’s coming up next.

The Hoops’ next fixture is against Hibs on Saturday as the 12:30pm kick-off in Edinburgh will prove to be a tough test.

Celtic also have a Scottish Cup tie against the Edinburgh club to come as Rodgers chases a treble for the third time in his Parkhead managerial career.
