Celtic have undoubtedly missed American defender Cameron Carter-Vickers since he was ruled out with a knee injury last month.
Carter-Vickers was sent for an operation after he helped Celtic get past Rangers in the Scottish Cup semi-final 1-0 win at Hampden.
Ange Postecoglou said at the time that in order to give the Celtic defender a chance of making the start of the season, he had to get the surgery as soon as possible after the semi-final.
Well, it seems that the Celtic manager’s gamble has paid off as American journalist Larry Henry Jr tweeted an update about Carter-Vickers’ recovery.
Larry Henry Jr tweeted, “Source: Cameron Carter-Vickers, who had been sidelined with Celtic, is expected back for the start of the new #SPFL season.
“Carter-Vickers underwent knee surgery following Celtic’s advancement to the Scottish Cup Final. Best XI player in Scotland.”
This is brilliant news for the club and the fans. With Celtic’s participation in the Champions League group stages, this gives the big defender plenty of time to build up his fitness ahead of the competition kicking off on the 19th and 20th of September. [UEFA]
Carter-Vickers has been central to Celtic’s defensive success this season. The US defender has built an excellent partnership with Carl Starfelt and together both defenders have helped ensure that Celtic have had the meanest defence in the last two seasons conceding just 34 goals this season and 22 the season before.
Ange Postecoglou has had to tinker with his backline over the last few weeks and it is fair to say that the fringe players coming in have struggled to find their form. The Celtic manager will also be delighted as this will ensure he goes into next season knowing that he will have his main central defensive pairing available.
