Alistair Johnston will now put his feet up after being part of a historic World Cup campaign with Canada.
This was an extra special World Cup for the Celtic defender because his nation was co-hosting the tournament alongside the United States of America and Mexico.
Coincidentally, following Mexico’s defeat to England on Monday morning, it now means the USA are the last co-host nation standing.
But Johnston can hold his head high, as Canada’s official Instagram account explained to the right-back how much of an impact he and his teammates have made on a country where football isn’t top of the list.
Are you worried Alistair Johnston’s World Cup performances results in him leaving Celtic? 😬🍀
Interest is growing as Johnston thrives with Canada… 🇨🇦

Alistair Johnston and his Canadian teammates have inspired a future generation
Johnston’s message after Canada’s World Cup exit: ‘Thank you, Canada. Your support gave us the belief that anything was possible & we hope that you all enjoyed the ride as much as we did! This group takes such pride in representing our country, and I hope that we made you proud. See you all soon 🍁’
Canada’s response to Johnston: ‘It’s hard to articulate how proud the entire country is of you, lads. The hundreds of thousands of Canadians who will now watch the game more, who watched every minute on the edge of their seat, who saw the light when everyone doubted us. Step by Step, we build. @canmnt is here to stay, and they know our name.’
Johnston is a leader without the armband
As many of the Celtic Park faithful are aware, Johnston isn’t just a popular character because of his consistent performances, but also because of how he goes about things.
There aren’t many players who articulate themselves better than Johnston in the media.
Whenever he speaks, it’s with pure confidence, and he is probably not just popular with fans, but also with his teammates.
Yes, Celtic are blessed to have Callum McGregor as captain, but you just know, if it’s needed, Johnston can also lead the champions of Scotland down the line because he has the characteristics to do so.
