Celtic are set to face a familiar name from the recent past tomorrow in the shape of Rennes full-back Birger Meling.
Ange Postecoglou’s team have been in Portugal all week, and take on the high-flying Ligue 1 side tomorrow morning.
And Norwegian Meling is a name that plenty of Celtic fans will be familiar with.
Back in the summer of 2019, shortly after the departure of Kieran Tierney to Arsenal, Celtic were tasked with finding a replacement left-back.
Rosenborg’s Meling was tracked by the club and seen as a ‘serious option’ (Scottish Sun) before manager Neil Lennon instead chose to sign Greg Taylor.
Meling signed for Nîmes and then moved on to Rennes a year later, where he is now a first-team regular.
While Boli Bolingoli was also brought in by Celtic in 2019, and endured an up and down spell, Taylor can now be classed as a really good bit of business.
For a period of time, many Celtic fans felt we’d missed a trick in not signing Norwegian international Meling.
Yet Taylor has now become such an important part of Postecoglou’s team, both on and off the pitch. It’s hard to imagine the Scandinavian having the same impact.
Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see Meling in action against Celtic tomorrow. If fans are able to view the game online.
