Celtic fans don’t want to admit Frank McAvennie’s truth about Maik Nawrocki after pre-season return

Pre-season has already begun for those Celtic players not participating in this summer’s World Cup.

That includes a few big hitters, such as captain Callum McGregor and club-record signing Arne Engels, but there is also the forgotten man, Maik Nawrocki.

Nawrocki was on loan at Hannover 96 last season – Germany’s second tier – as they missed out on promotion to the Bundesliga.

One man delighted to see Nawrocki back in Celtic colours is Frank McAvennie.

The former Celtic striker has stated that the Brendan Rodgers signing is ‘probably the best defender we have’, as he told his Let Me Be Frank Podcast.

“I tell you what I did like to see, Nawrocki, he is back training,” said McAvennie. “I like him. I think he is probably the best defender we have.

“I know I have a go at Liam Scales. But when we are under pressure, Liam Scales is our best defender, because he doesn’t think and he puts his body on the line.

“But I think Nawrocki is a really good defender. He can play out, and he is comfortable.”

Nawrocki would thrive under Martin O’Neill

Anytime Nawrocki was given a chance by Celtic, he performed, never looked out of place, and questions were raised as to why he wasn’t playing more.

Then normal service would resume, because he would be back on the bench, or not in the matchday squad at all.

But with Martin O’Neill now in the Celtic Park dugout, hopefully, he will be the one to truly ignite a career that can thrive in Glasgow.

Nawrocki got rave reviews for his Hannover spell, including suggestions that Bundesliga clubs are watching him.

Once upon a time, Celtic had Gustaf Lagerbielke on their books. He is now thriving at Braga, including beating the Hoops in the Europa League last season, as well as competing at the World Cup with Sweden.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if Celtic opt to sell Nawrocki this summer, and he ends up producing the goods at another club.
