Celtic fans told of possible ‘underlying’ issue amid Brendan Rodgers transfer frustration

Brendan Rodgers is clearly unhappy at the moment.

His concerns seem to be growing stronger and stronger by the day as he seeks to reinforce his squad with more quality before the window shuts in September.

Rodgers told the press on Friday that he may need to do more to convince the Celtic hierarchy to provide him with the necessary transfer funds.

Chris Sutton has voiced his frustrations on multiple occasions this summer over Celtic’s lack of spending and the failure to be pro-active in the market.

And Clyde 1 Superscoreboard pundit and Falkirk striker Brian Graham thinks there might be an ‘underlying’ issue that is causing the current ordeal.

Brian Graham floats ‘underlying’ Celtic issue for lack of spending

Graham thinks there could be an ‘underlying’ problem that is preventing Celtic from spending the cash they clearly have in the bank balance.

Gordon Dalziel and Gordon Duncan also added to the conversation live on radio, with Dalziel saying initially: “I said on the programme the other night there about Peter Lawwell and how Celtic run their club, it’s absolutely brilliant.

“Of course, every manager will tell you, not just Brendan Rodgers, will say (to the board): ‘I need another player, I need another player.’

Duncan: “I know but this is more than that, isn’t it? His interview yesterday he said he’s first and foremost looking to replace the ones who have just left, just trying to get to an even keel.

“This is not just a manager going: ‘Oh what am I like, cheeky chappy, always wanting something else.’ That’s not what this is.

Graham: “It seems as if something is underlying, we’ll never know. He’s desperate to get players in. Maybe Celtic are not wanting to pay the money and that’s why fans are getting their backs up a little bit.

“They see the finances that the club have got, and they just expect them to go out there and get them for £8m. But there’s negotiations to be had, and if Celtic can get a better deal, Celtic will try.”

Rodgers must ‘convince’ Celtic board to get deals done

Celtic appear to be lowballing every transfer offer they lodge this summer, which of course is a board-level decision.

It has nothing to do with Rodgers, but of course not getting the players in that he craves impacts him severely.

He said on Friday: “Yeah, I don’t know. I think it’s… I don’t conclude the deals. The deals are…there are always time lags on them for different reasons.

“But I think that, come the end of that period, of course, we would want to… we would love to get players in earlier. There’s no doubt I would have liked to have players in now, but it’s not the case.

“So I’m not going to kill my own joy and overthink stuff. I focus on what’s here. We know the work that we need to do, and it’s my responsibility to convince the club that we really need them.

“I’m not doing that job as well as maybe what I can, but I will continue to pursue that because it’s something that’s important for us.”
