‘100% Brendan Rodgers wanted him’ – Andy Walker reacts as Celtic set to miss out on transfer target

Brendan Rodgers has been pretty vocal about how Celtic have gone about their transfer business this summer.

The word ‘ambitious’ has been used by the Celtic manager, as a crucial final month of the 2025 summer transfer window awaits the champions of Scotland.

Everybody knows that Celtic have the money to splash, with or without Champions League football, but supporters feel crucial targets are slipping away from them as that September 1 deadline edges closer.

One man who has been linked with the Hoops for quite a while now is Motherwell midfielder Lennon Miller after his breakthrough campaign at Fir Park last term.

Brendan Rodgers ‘100%’ wanted Lennon Miller at Celtic

One thing seems certain, and that’s Miller leaving Motherwell before the window slams shut.

Journalist Mark Guidi stated on Go Radio that Rodgers ‘100%’ has wanted to sign the Scotland international, but Celtic have now ‘missed the opportunity’ to secure his signature.

Former striker Andy Walker stated, regardless of what happens, the next step in Miller’s career is going to be ‘really exciting.’

Mark Guidi: “There was a chance for Celtic to go and get Lennon Miller in early January, and they missed the opportunity. And now he is going to go abroad.

“Brendan Rodgers wanted Lennon Miller. 100% Brendan Rodgers wanted him.”

Walker responded: “I think, for Motherwell’s sake, he has got to go now. They want to get as much as they can. They can’t afford to let his contract run down. You wouldn’t want that.

“I am sure he will go to, whether it’s Celtic or abroad, it’s just a really exciting next step for him.”

Will Miller play for Motherwell against Rangers?

Miller has 12 months left on his contract, on top of the fact that he can bring in a club-record fee for his Motherwell side, and that would be huge for a club of that size.

Therefore, it has been suggested that the rising midfielder might not feature for Motherwell again as he tries to sort his future out.

But with Rangers being the opening game for the new boss, Jens Berthel Askou, will he be starting Miller?

“He was partially in training [on Thursday] and almost full training [on Friday],” Askou told BBC Sport.

“Then we’ll take a decision on whether it’s time for him to be part of the team again on Saturday or whether it’s too late while all the other things are working in the background.

On whether the club has accepted a bid for Miller, Askou replied: “That is a question not for me but for the board.”
