Who is going to be the next Celtic manager?

This is a question the Celtic Park faithful have been asking for months because Brendan Rodgers’ contract was due to expire next summer.

But Rodgers’ abrupt exit on Monday evening has caused a shockwave across Scotland, and the aftermath of it all, such as Dermot Desmond’s scathing statement and Martin O’Neill’s return.

Several names have been linked with the Celtic job, including St Mirren’s rising coach Stephen Robinson, and he was shocked by the news coming out of Parkhead.

Stephen Robinson reacts to Brendan Rodgers leaving Celtic

Robinson showcased his class when reacting to Rodgers’ resignation, and told his press conference that he was hoping he would wake up on Tuesday morning and it would be ‘fake news.’

The Northern Irishman lauded what Rodgers has done at Celtic, the trophies he won and how he has been ‘absolutely fantastic’ for Scottish football.

“Really surprising,” said Robinson about Rodgers’ exit. “I only got told late last night before I went to bed.

“I actually thought it was fake news. I thought I was going to wake up, and it’s not true. But it is. I don’t know anything about Celtic or the background to it.

“Brendan, obviously, had his reasons. What I will say is that it is a huge loss for Scottish football. He has been absolutely fantastic for both spells. Won numerous trophies. A brilliant brand of football in the country. I think he has been absolutely fantastic for Scottish football.

“I don’t know the background to it. The ins and outs. Obviously, there are reasons why Brendan left.”

How will Rodgers feel after his Celtic exit?

Everyone is now waiting for Rodgers’ reaction, which might come via the LMA (League Managers Association), especially his reaction to Desmond’s verbal pelters.

But when the dust has settled, Robinson thinks Rodgers will be ‘proud’ for all he has achieved in the famous green and white colours.

“You see managers lose their jobs all the time,” added Robinson. “It’s a precarious position that comes with a huge amount of pressure and scrutiny, especially if you are a Rangers or Celtic manager.

“It’s constant. It’s constantly under the microscope. I have sympathy for everyone who is brave enough to go into management. A lot of people talk about it. A lot of opinions in the game, but not many people put their neck on the line. Brendan has done that very successfully.

“I am sure he will be proud when he looks back on all of his achievements at Celtic.”
