In yesterday’s announcement by St Johnstone, the SPFL club said that Celtic’s Adam Montgomery will return to Paradise after completing a season-long loan at the Premiership strugglers.
The 20-year-old defender impressed during his time at The Saints and will head back to Celtic Park a better player for his 33 appearances for the club.
But within that statement, St Johnstone also announced that David Wotherspoon will also be leaving the club after a ten-year stint.

Wotherspoon was an integral part of the historic St Johnstone side that won a League Cup and Scottish Cup double back in season 2020/21. He also helped St Johnstone win the Scottish Cup in 2014 in a 2-0 win over Dundee United, ironically, at Celtic Park.
Alistair Johnston reacted to the news that Wotherspoon was being released on Twitter last night with a classy message to the St Johnstone midfielder. Simply put, Johnston said, “Great player, even better guy 🙌🏼”
And the connection between the players? Both are international teammates for Canada and both were also selected for the Qatar World Cup last November.

Johnston, clearly, has gotten to know the departing St Johnstone player very well during their time in Qatar. Even though they only shared 14 minutes on the pitch together in the 2-1 loss to Morocco, both would have bonded during the month-long stay in the Middle East.
In fact, it was Wotherspoon who was waxing lyrical about Alistair Johnston once the news had broken that he was set to join Celtic this season. Wotherspoon at the time said he told Johnston that the move to Celtic was a ‘no-brainer’ and even called him ‘Mr Consistent’.
Wotherspoon was correct, of course, as the Celtic fans are loving Johnston’s contribution to the team so far. We wish Wotherspoon all the best for the future as he ponders his next career move.
