Montgomery made 33 appearances for the McDiarmid Park side this season. St Johnstone have spent much of their season fighting relegation and Montgomery played a huge part in helping the club keep its SPFL status for another year at least.

Interim manager, Steven McLean was delighted with his form for the club and just a few weeks ago backed his nomination for the Scottish Football Writer’s Young Player of the Year Award by hailing the ‘outstanding’ young full-back.

Montgomery was tipped as a player with a big future by former St Johnstone boss, Callum Davidson and after the season he has had at The Saints, it’s hard to disagree with that.

What now for Adam Montgomery at Celtic?

Montgomery certainly returns to Celtic a better player than when he left us. The only question is, does he have the quality to be able to become a regular starter for the club?

With Greg Taylor in the form of his life and Alexandro Bernabei ahead of him in the pecking order, it will be tough for the 20-year-old to make an impact at the club.

The Scotland u21 international does still have two years left to run on his contract so another loan move may not be out of the question for next season. After tasting first-team football this season, Montgomery will want to sample it again and could well be open to another stint on loan.

Whatever happens, I still believe it is too early in his career to make any judgements on whether or not he will make it at Celtic. Montgomery clearly still has a lot of developing to do and with the raw talent that he has, there is still time for him to make it at Celtic.
