Celtic star Benjamin Nygren created history for Sweden in Graham Potter’s first game in charge of the national side.
Nygren was called up to the Swedish national squad after a good start to the season saw the Celtic midfielder catch Graham Potter’s eye.
Potter’s first game in charge of Sweden was a tough World Cup qualifier against Switzerland where the English manager decided to play Celtic’s Nygren as a centre forward.
But despite Sweden losing heavily 4-1 in Switzerland, it wasn’t all bad news for Nygren who scored the first Swedish goal of Potter’s national career.

Celtic midfielder Benjamin Nygren’s ‘greatest’ Sweden experience
Nygren has won his seventh cap for his country in the defeat to Switzerland and has opened up on scoring his third goal for his country.
Nygren told Fotbollskanalen, “It was an extreme joy and an honor to play for Sweden. It has been one of my biggest dreams since I was little.
“It is such a huge honor to represent your country and to score goals for your country. It is one of the greatest things you can experience, so it was great fun, but it is really hard that it was not enough anymore.”
It was a good finish from the Celtic midfielder and the goal can be viewed here.
Sweden fans were over the moon with the Celtic star as he kept Liverpool’s Alexander Isak out of the team.
Celtic’s Nygren talks about playing as a striker for Sweden
But how did Celtic midfielder Nygren feel about playing that starring role up top for his country?
Nygren continued, “I think it was okay. Mattias and I haven’t played strikers that much, although I may have done it more.
“I’ve played in basically all offensive positions, but in the end it’s football and you move on the pitch. I’m a player who moves a lot and covers large areas.
“Just because you’re in a position on paper, it doesn’t mean you’re there for the whole match.”
Sweden now advance on to the Nations League playoffs despite finishing bottom of their World Cup qualifying group because they won their Nations League group in 2024.
