Celtic star was ‘in a huff’ after Aberdeen win as record slips through fingers

Celtic have been excellent this season, both in attack and at the back.

Brendan Rodgers has got his squad performing and that is why they are well out in front at the top of the Premiership by a whopping 16-point margin.

Celtic hammered Aberdeen 5-1 last night thanks to goals from Daizen Maeda, Jota, Callum McGregor and Yang but what would have been more satisfying for the manager was the lack of opportunities conceded at the other end.

Granted, Dons had their moments which broke manager Jimmy Thelin at their lack of cutting edge.

But it would have been a welcome evening for goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel who only really had one shot on target to face throughout the 90 minutes or so.

Kasper Schmeichel was ‘in a huff’ over Celtic conceding a goal vs Aberdeen

On another night Schmeichel would have kept another clean sheet.

That would have helped the Danish stopper to equal a Celtic record of 20 Premiership clean sheets to share the accolade with the likes of Craig Gordon and Fraser Forster who have kept that number in recent title wins.

Unfortunately for Schmeichel, a late Shayden Morris strike – beating him at his near-post of all places – left the goalie furious with himself and his defence as he booted a goal post in frustration.

And speaking as part of BBC Sportscene’s commentary team for the action on their highlights show, Stephen McGinn – the former Falkirk captain – pointed out that Schmeichel looked like he was disappointed at the last kick of the ball.

He chuckled: “He still looks so frustrated that he’s conceded a goal.

“It’s almost like he’s in a huff there with the ball in his hands.”

Schmeichel Celtic stats for his debut season

2024/5 stats so far
Matches played (total): 43
Premiership: 28
Scottish Cup: 1
Champions League: 10
League Cup: 4
Goals conceded (total): 39
Clean sheets (total): 23

Schmeichel’s talents this season have been clear to see since he took over the Joe Hart role at the beginning of the campaign.

The big man, 38, has managed 23 clean sheets in all competitions but the record he just missed out on was Premiership-based specifically.

With still five games in the league to go before the split, that should leave the former Manchester City and Leicester goalkeeper with plenty of time to equal the record.

He should also look towards breaking it in his first year as a Celtic player which would mark an incredible debut campaign between the sticks with Glasgow’s biggest club.
