Celtic were the major contributors as the SPFL released some more good crowd news after the opening weekend of the season.

The Premiership, Championship, League 1 and League 2 all got underway at the weekend and there were plenty of talking points from top to bottom.

The crowd figures were also extremely strong despite some of the country’s biggest teams playing away from home.

However, the nation’s number one side, Celtic, were on home turf and 58,772 fans took in our opener against Ross County.

That was by far the biggest contribution (44%) in the total 133,586 tally that watched SPFL matches over the weekend.

The SPFL shared the numbers on Monday afternoon and welcomed the “second highest opening weekend league attendances” in their ten year history.

The governing body say the total ranks just behind the opening weekend of 2018/19, when Celtic also played at home.

There has been plenty of good crowd news coming out of the SPFL in recent times. Just last week, they were talking about over five million supporters watching matches last season, another record.

Despite the standard of much of Scottish football appearing to be as low as ever, and little competition for Celtic most weeks, fans are still engaging with our national game. That’s great news.

The Celtic support is likely to sell-out almost every home game this season, while away tickets will be even harder to come by.

Perhaps, with yet more evidence of fans being the lifeblood of the sport, some clubs will allow more of an away persuasion in to their stadiums. Then again, probably not.
