Celtic told key appointment in 2024 was ‘betrayal’ to the players after Wilfried Nancy’s sacking

Only time will tell just how much harm Celtic have done to themselves this season.

From the 2025 summer transfer window, not keeping Martin O’Neill on board the first time around, and the Wilfried Nancy era, it has been a mess of the highest order.

If Celtic don’t win the title at the end of the season, then the supporters will know where to point, and the board will, rightly so, bear the brunt of it.

But following Celtic beating Dundee United over the weekend, and Martin O’Neill bringing calmness back to proceedings, Hugh Keevins didn’t mince his words about the mess the powers that be have made at Parkhead.

'In my role I will be doing all I can to further develop our work across talent identification, development and analytics, always with the aim of ensuring high-level support of football performance.'

Hugh Keevins slates Celtic’s appointment of Paul Tisdale after Wilfried Nancy’s sacking

When the dust has well and truly settled, the Paul Tisdale appointment at Celtic will go down as one of the worst calls the club has made in a very long time.

Tisdale was appointed Celtic’s Head of Football Operations in October 2024, and many, including Chris Sutton, didn’t exactly know what his job entailed at the champions of Scotland.

Either way, Keevins went one step further and stated that Tisdale’s appointment was ‘another betrayal’, not just to the fans, but also to the players.

It’s nearly the halfway stage of the January transfer window, and the best Celtic have done is recall Stephen Welsh from his loan spell at Motherwell and sign Julian Araujo on a loan deal from Bournemouth.

That’s why Keevins was right to call out the ‘complete and utter shambles’ of how the Hoops go about their business.

“I think the players (against Dundee United) reacted directly to the return of Martin O’Neill,” said Keevins. “He spreads positivity throughout the club.

“From the moment Nancy arrived, he spread negativity throughout the club. Celtic, the dressing room and the stands, everything was on a downer because everyone knew they had somebody in charge who didn’t deserve to be in charge and who was incompetent.

“The whole transfer business, the appointment of Paul Tisdale, was another betrayal of the Celtic fans and the Celtic players.

“In terms of the transfer window, they are a complete and utter shambles.”
