Celtic have no chance of signing Evan Ferguson in January

Celtic have been linked with Evan Ferguson plenty of times but let’s be real, he isn’t joining.

Reports claimed that Ferguson’s loan at Roma would be terminated and that could possibly open the door for the Hoops.

Having Martin O’Neill at the helm would be a good bargaining chip for a Republic of Ireland international, but that shouldn’t get in the way of reality.

Why Evan Ferguson won’t join Celtic

Wages

There are three key reasons why Ferguson won’t be heading to Celtic Park in January.

Firstly, and most obviously, his wages. According to Capology, the 21-year-old is earning around £30,000-a-week.

That would make him one of the highest earners with the Hoops, but any permanent deal would probably see him get a pay rise. We know how the Celtic model works, and paying big bucks is something they rarely do.

Finding his feet at Roma

Secondly, the forward is now beginning to find form at Roma.

When the Bhoys were first linked with the forward, it was because he wasn’t getting any game time.

Ironically, since scoring a brace against Celtic in the Europa League, Ferguson has looked much better.

He scored against Lecce to make it two goals from his last three starts and five in 20 games.

Roma now appear to have faith in his ability and wouldn’t want to lose someone after he finally found his feet.

Evan Ferguson would consider Celtic to be a sideways move

After watching the way that Celtic defended against Roma, Ferguson wouldn’t have been left impressed.

He bullied the Hoops backline and knows that he would face weaker opposition in Scotland.

In a World Cup year, he wants to challenge himself against the very best and while he would score bags of goals, he wouldn’t be testing himself.

A club of Celtic’s stature is always a privilege to play for, however the quality of opponent leaves a lot to be desired for some.
