Celtic told ex-player ‘ticks a lot of boxes’ to be the next manager, as Ange Postecoglou won’t return

The last time Celtic appointed somebody who had no prior connections to the club was Ange Postecoglou in 2021.

The Greek-born Australian had arrived from the J-League in Japan and took over from Neil Lennon.

Despite being an unknown figure and question marks over Postecoglou’s head, he proved his worth in serious style, including winning the Treble.

So, with Celtic looking for a new manager following Brendan Rodgers’ brutal exit last Monday, will the powers that be bring in somebody who has prior connections to the club?

The dream for some supporters is for Postecoglou to return to Glasgow, but Kris Boyd feels there is another valid option on the table for Celtic.

Robbie Keane ‘ticks a lot of boxes’ in Celtic’s search for a new manager

As of this moment, there are no indications that Celtic are pushing for Robbie Keane.

But sources have told 67 Hail Hail that Keane has applied for the Celtic job, and Boyd told Sky Sports he ‘ticks a lot of boxes.’

“There are other names out there,” said Boyd. “Robbie Keane has been mentioned. He has been doing excellent things at the clubs he has been at.

“He has won a couple of championships. Doing well at Ferencvaros as well. He is an ex-Celtic player. He ticks a lot of boxes for Celtic.”

Ange Postecoglou won’t return to Celtic

Postecoglou won the Europa League with Tottenham last summer, their first major trophy in nearly 20 years, and their first European honour since the 80s.

But the Celtic hero was sacked by Spurs in the summer, and then appointed Nottingham Forest coach in September – he only lasted 39 days.

Boyd feels those two brutal sackings have probably resulted in Postecoglou now wanting time out of the game, hence why he can’t see a return to Celtic.

“Ange Postecoglou. I don’t think it will be Ange,” added Boyd. “I think that will be the case.

“Unless you know that, sometimes, you can sit down with owners and they are able to convince you that you might change. I don’t think it will be Ange Postecoglou.

“Since he has been at Celtic, and then that first year at Tottenham was good. Obviously, finished up getting into the Champions League.

“But I think he has had a rough spell in management over the last period of time. He might just want a period of time out to rejuvenate himself and come back.”
