Celtic told to ‘definitely’ sign free agent defender who is at Euro 2024

The rumours surrounding Celtic and their potential transfer business have been hitting the headlines hard over the last week or so now.

With links to Martin Dubravka and Scotland striker Tommy Conway doing the rounds, it seems that Brendan Rodgers and the Celtic recruitment team are already hard at work.

There are also a number of Celtic players who will depart this summer with Gustaf Lagerbielke and Hyeongyu Oh being two who have been named recently.

However, it’s another potential addition that has Peter Grant talking as the former Celtic hero urges his old club to try and sign a centre-back who is out at the Euros with Scotland.

Celtic should ‘100%’ sign Scott McKenna

Scott McKenna was one of eight players who were let go by Premier League clubs who had been previously linked to Celtic.

Now out of contract, Grant has urged his old club to get a deal done to help ‘bolster’ the Celtic squad.

Grant said [The Go Radio Football Show], “I think before he went down south, I know he would have got more money or whatever, I would have signed him for Celtic or Rangers.

“Absolutely. They were looking for centre-halves at the time and if I was at Celtic and Rangers and it was affordable, I would have definitely taken him.

“100%. I would still look at him [now]. The thing is Liam Scales has done exceptionally well and went in to replace Scott at Aberdeen, so he’s done exceptionally well.

“But if you’re wanting to bolster your squad and think you need a few players, and if Celtic lose the other two younger centre-backs, he’s definitely somebody I would look at that.

“He’s got a bit of character about him.”

Brendan Rodgers does need more depth in the central defensive areas especially if Lagerbielke is set to leave. But he also needs quality.

For too long the Celtic boss has had to rely on Cameron Carter-Vickers to strengthen that Hoops backline and the US defender needs help.

For all Liam Scales has done great this season, I still don’t think he’s the long-term partner for Carter-Vickers.

And I’m not sure McKenna is either. However, as a free agent, it does seem like a no-risk signing and at just 27, if it doesn’t work out, Celtic could still command a significant fee for the international defender.

However, McKenna’s links to Celtic have gone as far back as five years ago during Rodgers’ first tenure as the Hoops gaffer so the temptation might be there to take a gamble on a player who will cost nothing this summer.
