Celtic transfer target who failed to secure move away now could be available for significantly reduced fee

Celtic’s summer transfer window seemed to leave more questions than answers.

11 players joined in total but the Hoops still missed out on targets as Brendan Rodgers only managed to bring in one of the two strikers he hoped for.

Kelechi Iheanacho signed on a free transfer in a desperate scramble to fill the void after Adam Idah signed for Swansea City.

Some of Celtic’s other transfer targets failed to get moves away and as a result, this has had consequences for their respective clubs.

Louis Munteanu asking price reduced after failed move

Louis Munteanu was one of the stories of the transfer window. Munteanu went AWOL after failing to secure a move away from Cluj, citing an ongoing pay dispute after expressing his desire to leave.

The Romania international is still at Cluj after the deadline, and won’t be moving until January at the earliest.

Cluj wanted €18m for Munteanu but after Celtic had an offer of £6.9m rejected, FCSB owner George Becali said he would only buy him for a maximum of €4.5m.

He told Digi Sport: “The original price was valid as long as he’s a footballer with the club – but when he walked away it changes.

“A friend told me that ‘if you give him 6, they will take it’. I thought, ‘have I gone crazy?’ I thought about it but I do not think he would come. But where has all the money gone in Europe?

“Now, in a year or two, because after that he’ll get old, he will only be worth €4.5 million.”

Louis Munteanu could make Romanian Super League history

The longer Munteanu remains at the Cluj, the more likely it is that his asking price falls.

While his current employers will be holding out for a big fee, even if the forward was to leave for €4.5m, that would still be a record fee for a club in the Romanian top flight.

Their previous record was a €3m transfer back in 2017, however, if he remains at Cluj, Celtic could be tempted to return in January.
