Celtic striker Johnny Kenny says that League One isn’t ‘a lot’ different from the Scottish Premiership.

The striker moved on loan to Bolton Wanderers at the end of the January transfer window, and is now starting to really hit his stride at the Lancashire club.

Kenny has scored in three consecutive games for Wanderers, who sit third in the table. Combining his loan spell with his five months at the start of the season with Celtic, his goal tally for the campaign is now in double figures.

Speaking to the media, the Ireland international acknowledged the difference in stadium size, but said that he found the level similar.

Is this the worst group of finishers you’ve seen in a Celtic squad?

Johnny Kenny ‘wouldn’t say’ League One is different from Scottish Premiership

Asked about his new environment in Bolton, Kenny said: “I wouldn’t say that it’s a lot different from the Scottish Premiership.

“I’ve been playing at Celtic Park now for the last year and at other stadiums in Scotland.

“We’re going to 60,000 at Celtic Park, and now we’re coming here. I don’t know what there is here, 3,000, 4,000?

“So obviously, that part is different, but you have to control what you can control on the pitch.

“It can’t really affect what’s around you. You just need to focus on the pitch. I came in with a calf injury, so it set me back probably two or three weeks, so I was just trying to build up to full fitness.

“But I have a connection on the pitch with Sam Dalby. Down here, it’s probably a bit more physical than what I’m used to up the road.

“Probably a bit more direct at times, but it’s something I want to learn and get used to. I want to be here until the end of the season and perform and get us back to where we belong.”

Kenny’s career at Celtic began in January 2022 when he signed a five-year contract after a breakout season at Sligo Rovers, but after a series of loans, he wouldn’t make his debut until three years later.

His first goal for the club arrived in a 5–1 win away at Aberdeen in May 2025, and he was rewarded for his development with a new four-year contract in August last year.

After Martin O’Neill’s interim arrival, he enjoyed a run of form that included two goals in the 74-year-old’s first match against Falkirk and a vital headed opener in the Premier Sports Cup semi-final win over Rangers.

In Wilfried Nancy’s 33-day tenure, Kenny missed five big chances in six games per official stats, scoring no goals.
