Celtic’s Luke McCowan shares how he is really feeling after not being called up by Scotland

Celtic midfielder Luke McCowan has made a real impression in his outings so far for the Bhoys in the Scottish Premiership.

The 26-year-old has now chalked up four appearances for his boyhood club, providing an element composure in the engine room that was on full view last Sunday in Dingwall.

After Celtic defeated Ross County, Brendan Rodgers lauded Luke McCowan’s ‘outstanding’ contribution to help turn the tide as his side ran out 2-1 winners at the Global Energy Stadium.

The Irishman stated: “Second half, the guys coming into the game, Paulo and Luke, they were outstanding. They were flexible on the ball, they showed good movement.”

Despite Celtic captain Callum McGregor’s international retirement and injuries to the likes of John McGinn in the Scotland midfield, McCowan hasn’t been handed a debut call-up for Scotland despite continuing to impress for the reigning Scottish Premiership champions.

Nevertheless, his time will come, and he has since spoken out on the development as he instead takes part in the Bhoys’ trip to Sligo Rovers on Wednesday night.

Per the Daily Record, McCowan isn’t too fussed about missing out on the Scotland fold this time out with his focus firmly on Celtic, though he has indicated the chance to represent his country in the future would be an honour worth cherishing.

He stated: “If it comes, it comes. I’m not really fussed about it. I’m at a club this size and it’s not my focus. If the Scotland manager picked up the phone and asked me to go, I’d happily go. Of course I’d love to represent my country.

“The time is not there yet. Whether it comes with more years here and more minutes on the pitch, then so be it. But right now my full focus is getting in this team and being effective. I’ve been involved a lot already. It’s about showing you are as good as the player coming off and I know myself that I’m as good as the players that are starting.”

“It’s about gaining the manager’s trust. That’s the big thing under a new manager, it’s about knowing I can do jobs in games. I’d like to think I’ve done that so far but it’s about doing it over and over again and having that consistency.

“I wanted a seamless transition into the team. I know obviously more minutes to come but I’ve got a lot of time in my hands to do that. I know that the boys in the team and the coaches and staff and everybody in the club have been helping me do that.”

Luke McCowan has time on his side at Celtic

Coming from a background where he was playing Scottish Championship football only two years ago, McCowan appears to be grateful for the position he is in now at Celtic rather than wishing away his current reality.

With the entire fanbase behind their latest hero, the mission for him is now to break into the Hoops’ starting line-up. Nevertheless, as long as he plays his part, the Greenock-born man will be happy with his contribution.

McCowan vowed to help Celtic achieve further trophies in any way he can, as he stated last month: “Now I’m here, I’ve got to show to those fans that I deserve their support, and I’m desperate to repay them with goals and assists and hopefully by helping the team to win games and trophies.

“I feel that support from the fans everywhere I go, and it’s an incredible thing. It’s obviously nice to hear other people saying how much they are behind me.”

International honours will come in time, but it if refreshing to see McCowan is laser-focused on his role at Celtic for now.
