Celtic’s penalty shootout win against Rangers was the 21st time they have had to settle a game with a straight shootout.

Tomas Cvancara’s winning spot-kick ensured that the Hoops continued an impressive penalty record against Rangers and secured their place in the Scottish Cup semi-finals.

Their record from 12 yards out isn’t perfect, but they have been involved in some iconic spot-kicks over the years.

Celtic’s all-time penalty shootout record

From the 21 penalty shootouts Celtic have been involved in, they have gone on to win 12 of them.

The victory at Rangers was the first time in three attempts that they had won a shootout after an embarrassing defeat to Kairat Almaty in the Champions League, and last season’s Scottish Cup final loss vs Aberdeen.

A 21-goal shootout against Dundee United was one of most nerve-wracking but memorable days in the 2009 Scottish League Cup semi-final.

Gordon Strachan’s side won 11-10 as Scott McDonald, who took the first penalty, stepped up to score the winner and take the Hoops to the final.

Martin O’Neill says Celtic had practiced penalties before Rangers win

You could tell which team had been practicing penalties as Rangers’ were so bad that Dublin airport even mocked them in the aftermath.

Martin O’Neill revealed that they had been working on them in the week and that he had no doubt that all five takers would score.

He said: “I must admit that they took them brilliantly. They were obviously under a lot of pressure to do it.

“You can take penalties (in training), which we did, but you can’t really – what shall I say – you just don’t know what it’s like until you step up and take the penalties. It was pleasing to see how well they did it.”
