Charlie Mulgrew has always fancied a crack at management since he retired.
The former Celtic defender has been coaching at Hamilton Accies with their under-18s squad.
Mulgrew has already undertaken his UEFA Pro-Licence alongside two other Hoops favourites including Scott Brown and Jonny Hayes.
That set him up to take on his first big role as a boss in his own right and now that opportunity has been presented to him.
Charlie Mulgrew has been named Kelty Hearts manager
It was confirmed last night that Mulgrew had been appointed SPFL League One side Kelty Hearts’ new manager on a permanent basis.
The ex-Scotland cap has been joined at New Central Park by former Ayr United and Dundee United star Mark Kerr who will act as his assistant manager during their time at the club.
The pair replace another former Hoops player, albeit only in his youth days in the form of Michael Tidser.
He moved to East End Park to take the role of gaffer at Championship outfit Dunfermline Athletic.
Kelty’s statement read: “Kelty Hearts are delighted to welcome Charlie Mulgrew as the new 1st Team Manager at New Central Park.
“The former Scotland international defender replaces Michael Tidser in the hotseat following Tids appointment at neighbours Dunfermline Athletic.
“We’re sure that all Maroon Machine supporters will join us in welcoming Charlie and Mark (Kerr) to New Central Park.”
Which Celtic coach Mulgrew learned the most from
Mulgrew was close to a Celtic return as a coach under Brendan Rodgers earlier this season having worked with Accies’ acclaimed squad but he was pipped to the role.
Jonny Hayes was the man to eventually land the gig while Adam Asghar also arrived to work in the academy.
Mulgrew has learned from numerous Celtic managers and coaches over the years and recently the 38-year-old revealed the coach he had learned most from.
He tipped his cap to Tommy Burns and explained how he felt the Parkhead icon was “ahead of his time”.
