Celtic fans have been blessed to witness some high-quality midfield players wear their colours since the turn of the century.
Chris Sutton played with some of them during his playing days at Celtic, and now he is watching one as a pundit in Callum McGregor.
The Treble-winning striker was asked which current Premiership star he would love to play with, and he put forward McGregor’s name.
Sutton explained the admiration he has for the Celtic skipper, who has played in the most dominant period of the club’s rich and trophy-laden history.
Is Callum McGregor Celtic’s most underrated player?

Chris Sutton says he would have loved to have played with Callum McGregor at Celtic
What’s interesting is that, as Sutton was giving McGregor his flowers, he was asked by Kris Boyd on The Warm-Up Podcast whether the Celtic captain would get into Martin O’Neill’s Treble-winning side.
Usually, Sutton isn’t shy to say what he thinks, and he is very blunt in how he feels, but he didn’t answer this question.
That midfield that O’Neill had of Neil Lennon, Paul Lambert and Stiliyan Petrov had it all, so you can understand if there is a hesitation to say McGregor would play ahead of any of them.
Kris Boyd: “Is there a current Scottish Premiership player from any team that you would love to have played with and why?”
Chris Sutton: “I have always admired Callum McGregor.”
Boyd: “Would Callum McGregor get into your team?”
Sutton: “You would have to ask Martin O’Neill that. Would he have got ahead of Lennon, Lambert, Petrov and Moravcik could play in there.
“Maybe, it’s a subjective call, isn’t it? I think he is a fantastic player. He (Steven Naismith) gets bored with top quality player, but that’s what Callum McGregor is.”
Steven Naismith: “Oh, he certainly is.”
McGregor’s career at Celtic in numbers
McGregor will likely finish his career at Celtic, and so far, he isn’t showing any signs that won’t be the case.
This certainly isn’t a season where he hasn’t hit top form, but a lot of it is down to the mess around him, which, hopefully, will be properly sorted out in the summer.
Either way, it will never take away the stellar career that McGregor continues to write for Scotland’s biggest and most successful club.
