It’s going to be one of those weeks where the Celtic result at Tynecastle continues to dominate the headlines.

With pundits and former players all having their say on the VAR controversy at Hearts yesterday, former Celtic hero, Chris Sutton, has shared what he really thinks about referees after what he saw from the officials.

Speaking to Robbie Savage, Sutton says he no longer understands the handball rule after Tomoki Iwata was penalised in the Celtic penalty box for a supposed infringement.

Sutton said [BBC 606], “I don’t know what Rob honestly, and you commentate on games as well.

“I don’t know what the handball rule is anymore. I really, really don’t Rob.

“So if I don’t know, do referees know? I don’t think they do. I think they guess.”

Celtic and penalties

It was an emotional day yesterday with regards to spot kicks for the Celtic fans. Thinking that we had a player who could now convert in Adam Idah, the on-loan Norwich striker fluffed his chance to bag his sixth goal of the season from 12 yards.

Had Idah put that away the game would have taken a whole new dynamic and it is unlikely that Celtic would have been reduced to ten men either.

However, the point is, Celtic have an issue with penalties and at this stage of the season, it is criminal that we haven’t managed to sort it.

Idah’s miss yesterday is Celtic’s fifth missed spot-kick out of ten this season. Palma’s miss against Motherwell in November also cost us two points.

And whilst I appreciate VAR ultimately cost us yesterday, and we can’t be 100% sure, but it does seem as though Idah’s failed conversion had a material impact on the result yesterday as well.

Penalties are an issue at Celtic and it is one that Rodgers needs to address or it will prove costly in the league title race.
