Chris Sutton on two names he would eliminate for the vacant Celtic manager role

Over the last few days, there has been an abundance of names linked to the Celtic manager’s job. And it is little wonder.

After the treble success of this season, Celtic are an attractive option for managers and coaches right now. Cash-rich, a talented squad and guaranteed Champions League group football, it is little wonder the club are being linked to so many names.

But Chris Sutton has said there are two names he would rule look to take out of the equation in his column in the Daily Record this morning.

Sutton said, “Two men I would be ruling out of running immediately are Brendan Rodgers and John Kennedy. Rodgers is just simply not an option, surely.

“Brendan was a brilliant Celtic manager, but the way he left was just too much for some fans to stomach and I sense it may create a difficult environment between stands and technical area if he were to come back. I might be wrong, but I can’t see it.

“Kennedy was another I considered, but I’m not sure that is the route Celtic will go down. He has done the job before, mind you. And he certainly knows every single detail about the cub because he’s worked there, successfully, for so long.”

Considering John Kennedy is looking to join Ange Postecoglou it seems the current Celtic assistant manager has ruled himself out. But with reports claiming that the club are digging their heels in to keep him, could they be tempted to offer him the top job?

That would be extremely unlikely considering the amount of speculation linking other possible candidates to the position and Kennedy’s feelings about joining Spurs.

And Brendan Rodgers. There is absolutely no question that Rodgers is a top-class manager. However, his achievements at Celtic were tarnished by the way he left the club over two and a half years ago.

And although there are some Celtic fans that would be happy with his reappointment, there are many more who wouldn’t. But as with Kennedy, the former Celtic manager seems to have ruled himself out this week.

However, it does seem as though his name has been the one true constant in the headlines this week so who knows what is going on with the Northern Irishman.

Sutton is correct. Rodgers would be a divisive figure for the fans and what we need right now is stability. Especially at a time when the supporters will be keeping a close eye on Ange Postecoglou who may come calling for some of our first team stars.
