It’s happened, Wilfried Nancy has finally been shown the door at Celtic.

Celtic have made an absolute horlicks of this whole situation, including throwing him into the deep end, given the timing of his appointment at the start of December.

But Nancy deserved to get sacked, and he can have no complaints, as the Hoops will now look to bring in a replacement as soon as possible.

It’s not the only major managerial exit on Monday because Manchester United also sacked Ruben Amorim, and Chris Sutton thinks there is a comparison between the two.

What message would you send Wilfried Nancy as Celtic sack the manager?

Chris Sutton reacts to Celtic sacking Wilfried Nancy

Sutton made it clear that he isn’t surprised by Nancy’s departure, and it was the right call from the club.

Yes, it’s not ideal for Celtic, and it’s not a situation anybody wants to be in, but Nancy’s stubbornness to remain with his ill-fated system was slated by the former striker.

In the end, it’s proven to be his downfall, and Sutton touched upon it on Sky Sports News (05/01/26), including how Amorim fell down a similar hole at Old Trafford.

“It’s a bit similar to the Ruben Amorim situation at Manchester United, but over a shorter period,” said Sutton.

“He was fixated on changing Celtic’s style, going to a 3-4-3, playing in one particular way, and he just wasn’t adaptable.

“For Celtic to lose six out of eight games under him, and then to ship as many goals as they did. It was kamikaze stuff from Wilfried Nancy.

“As much as you want to give a manager time. I think Celtic have acted pretty decisively because there is still a league title to win.

“I think it’s the right decision because Celtic have to give themselves the best possible chance of winning the Scottish Premiership, and the best possible chance is to get somebody else in.”

Celtic problems ‘run deeper’ than Nancy

Yes, Nancy has now gone, and that’s one major issue out of the way. But it doesn’t fix the deep issues at the club.

Sutton made the great point that Celtic’s problems ‘run a lot deeper’ than Nancy, and it has been proven by just how woeful this season has been.

“For Wilfried Nancy to come in and tear everything up (from O’Neill’s winning run),” said Sutton. “If he was going to do it his way, the justification was him winning games. He didn’t do that.

“The problems at Celtic do run a lot deeper than just Wilfried Nancy, but Wilfried didn’t do himself any favours.”
