Chris Sutton’s brilliant response to Robbie Savage’s jibes over Celtic and ‘biggest club’ claim

There is nobody who champions Celtic more in the world of punditry than Chris Sutton.

The former striker donned Celtic’s colours during one of their most legendary periods when they won the Treble under Martin O’Neill.

It’s probably normal for Celtic to win Trebles now, but the class of 2000/01 did it for the first time since 1968/69, and that will never be forgotten.

Sutton was a huge part of that success, and now fans can get to see or hear him on a weekly basis, either on their TVs for Sky Sports or on BBC Radio.

After Celtic’s Scottish Cup final loss to Aberdeen, Brendan Rodgers’ side were taking a few verbal hits, including from Robbie Savage.

But the former midfielder was rightfully put in his place.

Chris Sutton on playing for Celtic ‘one of the biggest clubs in the world’

Sutton proudly waves Celtic’s colours, and he was doing that on the radio, including how they are the ‘biggest club in the world’.

Responding on 606 on BBC Radio 5 Live, Savage mocked that claim, even when Sutton corrected himself and stated that the Hoops are ‘one of the biggest clubs’.

Sutton brilliantly asked a question, that was never answered, and that’s, ‘who was the biggest club you played for? Crewe Alexandra’.

“Hold on, you were at the height of your career in England, and you went to Scotland to play,” stated Savage.

Sutton then responded: “The biggest club in the world, Rob. Celtic. Glasgow Celtic.”

Savage then added: “Is Real Madrid in Scotland? It’s the biggest club in the world? Is Barcelona out in Scotland as well?”

Sutton then continued: “One of the biggest clubs in the world. Celtic are one of the biggest clubs in the world.”

Savage then added: “You just said ‘the biggest’. Make your mind up,” before Sutton stated: “There is a little slip of the tongue. It’s one of the biggest clubs in the world.

“What was your biggest club? Who was the biggest club you played for? Crewe Alexandra.”

Sutton and Robbie Savage’s career paths

Sutton didn’t just win trophy after trophy in Scotland, but he also won the Premier League title in England, under Kenny Dalglish at Blackburn Rovers.

Meanwhile, Savage played for the worst team in Premier League history, when he was the captain of the Derby County side that was relegated with a record amount of just 11 points in 2008.
