Celtic will have to produce a performance of a lifetime if they are to progress in the Champions League.
One big positive is that Brendan Rodgers can head to Germany with a fighting chance against Vincent Kompany’s Bayern Munich.
Celtic’s 2-1 defeat to Bayern Munich on Wednesday night was full of mixed emotions because of how poorly the team started the match and the defending for Harry Kane’s goal.
But, on the other hand, the Bhoys didn’t panic and when they did get going – post 2-0 – you could sense that Bayern just couldn’t wait for the final whistle to blow and they were happy to head back to Munich with that slight advantage.
So, how do Celtic approach the second-leg? Because this is a different animal altogether and the Allianz Arena has been unforgiving for away teams this season.

Chris Sutton disagrees with Celtic possibly going ‘gung-ho’ at Bayern Munich
Some would suggest that the story now writes itself for the Celtic manager and he has to go for it in Munich.
That was suggested by Gabby Logan when she stated ‘a bit more gung-ho at the Allianz’ after Celtic produced a very calm and risk-free approach in the first leg.
But Chris Sutton didn’t see it that way and stated ‘there will be a bit of balance’ and he even thinks there could be ‘much of the same’ from Rodgers’ point of view, as he told Match of the Day.
“Celtic have given themselves a chance,” said Sutton “At 2-0, I thought Bayern were going to absolutely run away with it. They took their foot off the gas, but Celtic finished strong.”
Gabby Logan then suggested: “A bit more gung-go at the Allianz?!”
Sutton responded: “Ermm, I think there will be a bit of balance. I think it will be much of the same. What Celtic can take great confidence from is the way they finished the game.
“They were dominant in the end and probably feel a little hard done by that they didn’t get an equaliser.”
Bayern Munich’s formidable home form
Rodgers was unbeaten at Celtic Park before Bayern turned up and put the first loss to the team’s name this season, so can the favour be returned?
If it does, then a performance beyond everyone’s expectations would need to be put on the board.
Here is Bayern’s home record in the Bundesliga this season…
| Played | W | D | L | GF | GA | GD | PPG |
| 11 | 10 | 1 | 0 | 37 | 9 | +28 | 2.82 |
And, despite those away losses in Europe, their home form in the Champions League stands at 100%
| Played | W | D | L | GF | GA | GD | PPG |
| 4 | 4 | 0 | 0 | 14 | 3 | +11 | 3 |
Only three goals conceded would be a worry, but rewind back to the Villa Park trip and Adam Idah netted a brace against a team that were yet to concede at home in Europe.
That’s some belief that anything can happen here, even if it’s an uphill task.
