Chris Sutton responds to suggestion Brendan Rodgers could walk from Celtic if transfer moves don’t happen

Brendan Rodgers is clearly very busy trying to get some transfer business done for Celtic before the transfer window closes on Friday.

67 Hail Hail discussed yesterday how Celtic were pursuing Arne Engels, Mateusz Bogusz and Auston Trusty as Rodgers looks to invest a large chunk of the money the club got for Matt O’Riley back into the Hoops’ first team.

Rodgers has made just four signings this summer so far. However, the Celtic boss’ fifth seems near after Fabrizio Romano said the club are set to sign Alex Valle on loan from Barcelona.

But even if Rodgers does make that signing there is still a bit of work to do to strengthen Celtic for the upcoming Champions League campaign.

And if the Hoops boss can’t get the players he wants, journalist Ian Ladyman asked Chris Sutton if Brendan Rodgers would be right to walk away from Celtic.

Sutton: Celtic hierarchy need to ‘appease the situation’

Whilst Sutton believes that Rodgers has been making all the right transfer noises, the former Celtic hero doesn’t think the Irishman will walk if the Parkhead club come up short in player additions this summer.

Sutton said on the It’s All Kicking Off podcast, “Oh, I don’t know whether he’d be right to walk away from one of the biggest clubs in the world.

“But he’s made his thoughts known in his press conferences in the last couple of weeks.

“Celtic, or most seasons when Celtic get into the Champions League, they don’t compete well enough.

“So it’s a big week, and even after the game against St Mirren, which Celtic won comfortably, Brendan was making noises saying we need more quality if we want the club to progress and have a go in Europe.

“It’s not just about domestic football.

“So I don’t think he’ll walk, but I think the Celtic hierarchy, not that they’re going to be forced into making moves, but they will have to make moves to appease the situation.”

Would Rodgers leave Celtic if he doesn’t get the players he wants this summer? Like Sutton says, it’s unlikely but it will put the board in the crosshairs of the Celtic fans if the club need to go into a Champions League campaign unequipped.

Losing a player of Matt O’Riley’s calibre was a blow but even before that happened, there was a clear need to strengthen the squad for the season ahead.

The good news is that the club seem to be pulling out the stops now to get fresh faces in. Let’s just hope that the moves that are being made now can be done before the transfer window closes this week.
